It's become exceedingly rare to come across an artist that can paint an entire picture and let you in on their whole life’s story with their raw voice alone. Singer-songwriter Alex Winters is such a talent. Her voice is powerful, strong, and emotive—upon first note, we are dropped into her visceral world of desire, pain, fantasy, sex, profound emotion, and unrequited love.
“I think some people are scared to look really deep inside of themselves and discover who they are at their core. I’ve never been afraid of doing that,” Alex declares. “I love asking myself questions and writing songs to answer them. Songwriting gives me a way to explore my innermost emotions, thoughts, and desires.”
Despite overcoming a challenging upbringing, Alex continuously and triumphantly turns past pain into power through song. She writes with the sort of well-earned strength that one can only garner after living through such experiences. That confidence is ever-present throughout her new full-length album, “Unexpected Trespasses”—a gritty, rock record out (February 27th) that speaks to anyone who is unafraid to face their deepest desires head on. About this process of uncovering one’s most authentic self, Winters says, “Sometimes it can heal you and sometimes it can tear your world apart, but it always leads you where you need to be if you’re brave enough to follow it.”
It’s clear that this unapologetic and honest approach to life, as well as the craft of songwriting, is leading Winters to a dedicated fan base. From winning a Shining Star award from the respected Luna Guitars, to her song “Silent Storm” winning Melody of the Year in a songwriting contest, the possibilities are infinite for Winters. Stand-out songs on “Unexpected Tresspasses” include “Leave Me Alone,” which explores the process of finally letting go and releasing unrequited love, while “More Than Friends” touches upon a friendship that could have been more, if only the stars had aligned. The candid “I Don’t Want To Want To” examines conflicting desires—a theme amidst Alex’s artistry.
Winters’ raw vocal prowess reflects the untameable spirit of someone who will not settle for smallness, submission, or shame; and the music matches that sentiment. Throughout the LP, distorted guitars, a driving bass, and powerful vocals immerse us in a sonic landscape similar to fan favorites Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless. Lyrically and sonically, it’s clear that Winters is here to cut through the surface.
“I’m one of those people who hates small talk,” Alex proclaims. “I don't want to talk about the weather or some sports event. I want to sit down with you over a cup of coffee and compare our childhood traumas. I would love to help others change their own narrative. I’ve been through some absurd shit and have come out on the other side stronger and tougher.” Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Alex Winters is here to stay.
